Call for scores: University of Florida School of Music

The University of Florida (UF) School of Music is inviting composers who identify as women to submit scores.


Applicants of any age, geographical location, background and stage in their professional career are welcome to apply. Selected works are going to be performed by the UF musicians throughout the 2023 and 2024 academic year at the UF School of Music, Gainesville, FL.


There is no submission fee. Selected composers are encouraged but not required to attend the performance of their work. There is no travel funding available at this time.


Deadline for priority consideration is 1 September at 11.59 ET. Some performers might keep accepting submissions throughout the academic year, but this is not guaranteed.


No more than two compositions from one composer is allowed. Pieces cannot be traditionally published but can be self-published. Only original compositions are accepted: no arrangements of public domain material. Submissions do not have to be anonymous, newly written and unperformed.


Category 1



  • Orchestral piece, duration five to 10 minutes.

  • Standard classical orchestra setting.

  • No more than timpani and four percussionists.

  • Preferably no harp and keyboard instruments.


Category 2



  • Jazz orchestra or combo, under 10 minutes.

  • Five saxophones, four (or five) trumpets, four (or five) trombones, preferably no doublings. Guitar, piano, bass, drums (optional percussion).

  • The piece also could be for any subset of the jazz orchestra.


Category 3



  • Euphonium quartet, under 10 minutes.


Category 4



  • Euphonium/tuba and percussion duet, under 10 minutes.


Category 5


Any of the following instrumentation:



  • Trombone quartet, trombone octet (six tenors, two basses), solo trombone (tenor or bass) with piano, solo trombone (tenor or bass) with fixed media, two trombones (any combination) and piano/fixed media, trombone trio (two tenors and a bass, or alto, tenor, bass).


Category 6



  • Any chamber ensemble instrumentation, under 10 minutes. (This will be forwarded to instrumentalists to see if they are interested in including the piece in their programmes.)


All submissions should specify the duration and instrumentation of the composition and include programme notes, score (with parts, for ensembles) in PDF format and an audio (midi export is fine) in MP3 format.


Interested composers should submit the scores here(link is external) before 1 September.


Note: The links to the files should remain available throughout the 2023 and 2024 academic year.
