BC THE ALBUM
Calvo Mistari and Bobby Mapesa's collaborative album, BC — which was released in October 2017 — was a long time coming. Working on BC was an interesting process, that saw Calvo, Bobby and Producer Dillie takek their time to find the right sound perfect for the album.
CALVO: The album has been a dope journey for Bobby and I. We’ve known each other for almost 10 years and collaborated on a song “UME NI MALIZA” in my 1st Album ‘Mwanaume Ni Effort’ back in 2014.
BOBBY: Hii album ni classic!!! Calvo ni mtu wangu. Tumefanya biz kadhaa pamoja so kufanya album haikua ngori. Chemistry imekua tangu Day 1
The beginning
CALVO: The first song, we worked on this project was ‘Tuzidi’ which features Dela. I remember driving to Dillie’s home in Rongai the day I had the idea for the beat. What I had in mind was to sample the drum kit off of Notorious BIG’s hit Hypnotize. Dillie instantly caught the vision and worked his magic. We sat on the beat for about 2 hours and what’s crazy is, after all that, we didn’t record vocals for almost 2 months.
The day we finally recorded, Bobby had passed by my house in Madaraka to just kick it and chill. We ended up writing and recording the entire song in just an hour. Still, we felt like something was missing. The chorus didn’t sound right to us. It was no surprise therefore when DNA listened to the song a few weeks later and told us he wasn’t feeling the chorus.
BOBBY: Niliambia Calvo tu zidi tu na hiyo chorus hivo, ilikua street mbaya, we release it that way.
CALVO: Just a week after DNA had shared his sentiments with us, I got a call fom Dela. It just so happened that she was in the area and was having a session at Pacho with Cedo and H_art the Band for their song ADABU. She was early for her session so she had some time on her hands. She passed by and listened to our ‘Tuzidi’. Right there and then the idea of her adding her incredible vocals to the project came to mind. Dela was more than willing and before we knew it she laced the track. She was indeed the missing piece, effortlessly bringing a calm vibe to the song’s grimy street feel.
