Teni is the stage name of the award-winning Nigerian singer-songwriter and actress Teniola Apata, who is known for her socially conscious lyrics and colorful fashion sense.
∙ The younger sister of popular Nigerian singer Niniola, Teni began singing and playing drums at age two. ∙ Despite graduating college with a degree in business administration, she decided to pursue a music career after a video of her song “Fargin” went viral in 2017. ∙ She cowrote the 2017 hit “Like Dat” for the Nigerian superstar Davido. ∙ In 2018, Teni won Most Promising Act to Watch at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards and was named Rookie of the Year at The Headies (Nigeria’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards). ∙ Teni’s 2018 hit “Case” won Best Pop Single at The Headies, while “Uyo Meyo” won for both Best Vocal Performance and Best Recording of the Year. ∙ The title track of her 2019 EP, Billionaire, reached No. 23 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart.
